Harter House isn’t just a name on a storefront. It’s a family legacy—one built on hard work, high standards, and a genuine love for this community.
Our history
It started with a passion for quality cuts and a belief that customers deserve better.
In 1973, Jerry and Barbara Bettlach opened Harter House Meat Market in Springfield, Missouri. But the story goes back even further. The Bettlach family had been perfecting meat-cutting techniques and family recipes in St. Louis since the late 1800s. That deep-rooted expertise came with them to the Ozarks, and the legacy lives on today.
What started as a single neighborhood butcher shop has grown into eight locations across Southwest Missouri and Northwest Arkansas. The stores have expanded. The menu of offerings has grown. But the core values—quality, service, and fair prices—have never changed.
Four generations later, Harter House is still family-owned, still community-focused, and still famous for our meats.
Community
Over the years, Harter House has supported dozens of local causes, organizations, and events throughout the Ozarks. From our annual fundraising events benefiting The Kitchen, Inc.—which has raised over $1.5 million to fight homelessness—to everyday acts of neighborly service, we show up for this community because this community has shown up for us.
We’re proud to call Southwest Missouri and Northwest Arkansas home. And we’re committed to making it a better place for everyone who lives here.

Our team includes long-tenured employees who’ve spent years—sometimes decades—getting to know our customers by name. They’re the ones who’ll go the extra mile to track down a hard-to-find ingredient, help you pick the right wine for dinner, or recommend the best cut for any occasion.
